Department of Optometry

About Us

The Department of Optometry, established in 1992, was the first optometry program in Taiwan, designed to train future optometrists. The department offers two levels of academic programs: a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree, a full-time, four-year program, and a Master of Science (M.S.) degree, a full-time, two-year program. Graduates of the bachelor's program are eligible to take the nationwide optometrist licensure examination and, upon passing, are certified to practice optometry. As a dynamic and rapidly evolving profession, optometry provides diverse career opportunities for our graduates, including roles in ophthalmology clinics, the spectacle and contact lens industry, optical-related industries, and other healthcare sectors. The two-year graduate program aims to equip students with the advanced knowledge and skills needed to pursue careers in research, either in basic or clinical fields or to become future faculty members.

Academics

The Department of Optometry curriculum provides a comprehensive series of clinical and scientific lectures designed to equip students with the knowledge necessary for future clinical applications. Laboratory practice is a critical component of our education, crucial in preparing students for their clinical careers. In the freshman and sophomore years, students receive broad foundational training in the sciences—such as biology, physiology, anatomy, optics, and introductory optometry—essential for their advanced studies. In the junior and senior years, students progress to specialized courses in areas like low vision, contact lenses, and binocular vision, further preparing them to become optometrists. To complete the program, students are required to undertake a four-month clinical internship at certified hospitals, gaining hands-on experience in both ophthalmology and optometric clinics.

International Cooperation

Optometry is a healthcare profession specializing in the examination and care of the ocular and visual systems. To better prepare our students for their future workplaces, we encourage them to invest their time and energy in participating in local and national optometric professional societies to acquire practical information and training necessary for their career development. The department also partners with international universities, such as The University of Melbourne, Tianjin Medical University, and Wenzhou Medical University, to provide valuable opportunities for our students.

Community Service

The department integrates its curriculum with community services, offering health education related to eye care. For instance, we provide vision care services at local elementary schools to teach students proper eye health practices. Additionally, we offer vision examinations and health education for the elderly in nearby communities. These initiatives ensure that our students not only gain academic knowledge but also contribute positively to the community by promoting eye health awareness.

Research

Our department is currently engaged in a variety of research projects, including basic research in biochemistry and nutrition. Additionally, we conduct optometry-related studies, focusing on topics such as contact lenses and myopia control. Details about the individual research interests of each faculty member can be found in their personal profiles.
